The Outdoor Community: A Source of Gratitude

In a world that can often feel isolating and overwhelming, it can be easy to forget the importance of community. However, for those who enjoy spending time outdoors, there is a special kind of community that exists both online and in person. This is a community of people who share a love of nature, adventure, and exploration.

I have personally experienced the power of the outdoor community on numerous occasions. I’ve shared this a few times on the podcast, but my first hiking experience was terrible. It was several years later when I gave hiking another shot and it just so happened that one of those friends who took me up that steep mountain years ago was now working for the Forest Service. All it took was one waterfall hike to redeem that steep mountain hike and I was hooked. Now before I joined the outdoor Instagram community I was a part of the outdoor community on Tumblr, which exposed me to local hidden gems like Colchuck Lake, the Enchantments, and North Cascades before they made it onto Social Media. It's also where I came across the first picture of Banff National Park in Canada and motivated me to road trip that same year up to the park, which to this day is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen.

Starting the Podcast helped me connect with so many amazing people across the country and I feel inspired each time I get to speak with a guest about their outdoor experiences. It also turned me from a day hiker to a backpacker, speaking with both Kellie and Tami about their experiences helped motivate me to take up backpacking. After several test runs with my gear at campgrounds, I was lucky enough to be invited to North Cascades NP for my first backpacking trip, by my first virtual episode guest, Sarah and her husband. I’m also extremely thankful to have connected with Justin from Just Trek and Jonathon from Outdoors Adventures+ last year, hearing and then seeing the community they’ve been able to cultivate helped inspire me to start my own local hiking club. It's been one of the most rewarding experiences helping show both new and seasoned hikers our local trail systems.

The outdoor community has not only helped me to become a more experienced and confident hiker, but it has also provided me with a sense of belonging and purpose. Whether it be on the trail or on Instagram, I feel connected to something larger. I'm surrounded by people who share similar values and interests, and I know that I can always count on them for support. Whether you're a seasoned hiker, a casual camper, or a nature enthusiast, there is a place for you in this community. I feel blessed to be able to connect with some many amazing individuals through the podcast and Instagram, whether virtually or in-person, I’m extremely grateful for the amazing outdoor community that’s on IG.
